Jamila Abidemi Woods, born on 6 October 1989, is an American singer, songwriter and poet based in Chicago. She went to St. Ignatius College Prep and then to Brown University, where she took a BA in Africana Studies and Theatre & Performance Studies, and her work turns on Black ancestry, Black feminism and Black identity, with self-love and the city of Chicago recurring throughout. Her first chapbook, The Truth About Dolls, appeared in 2012, and her poems have been anthologised in The Breakbeat Poets and Courage: Daring Poems for Gutsy Girls. She names Lucille Clifton, Gwendolyn Brooks, Toni Morrison and Frida Kahlo among her influences.
