Idlewild are a Scottish indie rock band formed in Edinburgh in 1995, when singer Roddy Woomble met drummer Colin Newton at a party. Beginning with chaotic, dissonant early material, they matured into a melodic, expansive rock sound. Their 2002 album The Remote Part entered the UK chart at number three, with the single "You Held the World in Your Arms" reaching number nine. They have since released ten studio albums, and their 2025 self-titled record reached number sixteen, their highest placing in over twenty years. Championed early by BBC Radio 1's Steve Lamacq, the band drew notice for ferocious performances, once memorably described by NME as "the sound of a flight of stairs falling down a flight of stairs" — a live reputation that fuelled their rise.
