About
Hugh Cornwell is an English musician, singer-songwriter and writer, born in 1949 and raised in Tufnell Park and Kentish Town. At William Ellis School in Highgate he played bass in a band with Richard Thompson, later of Fairport Convention. After a biochemistry degree at the University of Bristol he went to Lund University in Sweden for postgraduate research and formed the band Johnny Sox there. He brought it back to the UK in 1974, was joined by drummer Jet Black and bassist Jean-Jacques Burnel, and the group became the Stranglers. He was their lead vocalist and lead guitarist until 1990 and has since recorded a further ten solo studio albums.
