About
Houston Person is an American jazz tenor saxophonist and record producer, born in 1934 and raised in Florence, South Carolina. He played piano before switching to tenor, and studied at South Carolina State College, whose Hall of Fame inducted him in 1999. In the United States Air Force he joined a service band stationed in West Germany and played with Don Ellis, Eddie Harris, Cedar Walton and Leo Wright, later continuing his studies at Hartt College of Music. He became known through a run of albums for Prestige in the 1960s, and spent many years as the musical partner of the vocalist Etta Jones. More than 75 albums carry his name as leader. He received the Eubie Blake Jazz Award in 1982.
