Helena Hettema works at the join of poetry, music and theatre. Her cabaret Journeyman — 'n digter ontbloot is built on her acclaimed debut poetry anthology of the same name, moving through awakening, love, loss, death and the outcasts with social commentary woven through it. She sets the poets Toon van den Heever and Antjie Krog to music, and pays tribute to Marlene Dietrich, Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland and Édith Piaf. Peter van der Merwe, reviewing a performance at the Liberty Theatre on the Square in Johannesburg for the Pretoria News, called her one of South Africa's finest performers, with "a voice that ranges from crushed silk to wet gravel".
