About
Grant-Lee Phillips is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Stockton, California, who led the trio Grant Lee Buffalo in the 1990s. The band's 1993 debut Fuzzy — which Michael Stipe of R.E.M. called "the best album of the year hands down" — was followed by Mighty Joe Moon, with the modern rock hit “Mockingbirds”. He went solo in 2000 with Ladies' Love Oracle, turning toward folk and Americana, and a new audience met him as the town troubadour in Gilmore Girls. His 12th solo album, the self-produced In the Hour of Dust, came out in September 2025; he calls its mood “contemplative”, “trying to find meaning in an age of confusion”.
