Gene Simmons is the American-Israeli bassist and co-lead vocalist who co-founded the hard rock band Kiss in New York in 1973 alongside Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. Born Chaim Witz in Haifa in 1949, he became known onstage as "the Demon," a fire-breathing, blood-spitting persona whose famously long tongue turned into one of rock's most recognisable trademarks. Beyond Kiss he issued solo albums including a 1978 self-titled debut and 2004's Asshole, and founded his own label, Simmons Records. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Kiss in 2014. Touring now with his own band, Simmons carries that theatrical showmanship into smaller rooms, revisiting the Kiss catalogue with the spectacle that made him an arena institution.
