Galactic are an American funk band from New Orleans, formed in 1994 as an octet under the name Galactic Prophylactic and quickly pared back to a sextet. Jeff Raines and Robert Mercurio, childhood friends from Chevy Chase, Maryland, moved to New Orleans together for college at Tulane and Loyola, fell for the local funk scene of The Meters and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the shadow of Professor Longhair, and teamed up with the drummer Stanton Moore and the saxophonist Ben Ellman. Rich Vogel on Hammond organ and the vocalist Theryl DeClouet completed the band.
