Gabi Motuba is the 2026 Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz. Born in Mamelodi and based in Johannesburg, she is a vocalist and composer who also teaches at the Wits School of Arts, and she works where jazz meets avant-garde and experimental forms, making music that engages history, philosophy and spirituality. Her records read as arguments as much as albums: the debut Tefiti – Goddess of Creation in 2018, the politically charged The Wretched in 2020, and The Sabbath in 2024, which set her writing against a larger ensemble drawing on classical and global traditions as well as jazz. Alongside performing she composes for film, arranges music and mentors emerging artists.
