Flying Lotus is the stage name of Steven Ellison, an American producer, DJ, rapper and filmmaker born in Los Angeles in 1983. His genre-melting music folds jazz, hip-hop and electronica into records such as Cosmogramma (2010) and You're Dead! (2014), and he founded the influential Brainfeeder label while also recording for Warp. He won a Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album as producer of Thundercat's It Is What It Is, and contributed production to Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly. A grand-nephew of jazz pianist Alice Coltrane, he cites her as a defining influence. His live and festival sets, staged at Coachella, Glastonbury and Bonnaroo, are celebrated for pairing immersive visuals with live instrumentation.
