About
Early James is an American singer-songwriter born Fredrick James Mullis Jr. in Troy, Alabama, in 1993 and based in Birmingham. His music draws on Americana, alternative country, blues and folk, pairing dark, sardonic lyrics about depression, addiction and love with a voice the New York Times called "tattered and nervous, with a grainy quaver." Discovered by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, he signed to Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound and Nonesuch Records and released his debut Singing for My Supper in 2020, following it with Strange Time to Be Alive in 2022 and Medium Raw in 2025. He played the Newport Folk Festival in 2021. Often likened to Tom Waits, Early James has toured with The Black Keys, Shovels and Rope and The Lone Bellow, building a reputation as a compelling, offbeat live performer.
