Doktor Soutie is Philip Southey, who plays piano, electric and Spanish guitars, Irish whistle, synthesiser, djembe and bagpipe, and raps in Afrikaans. The set is a kaleidoscopic journey through Celtic laments, jazz piano, 80s synth pop, 90s rock, African beats and Spanish guitar, and every sound in it is created live: nothing is pre-recorded. Southey uses a looping system to build his compositions up — and break them down again — in real time, weaving breath, string and vellum into what the billing calls an intensely groovy tapestry.
