DJ Premier is the stage name of Christopher Martin, an American hip-hop producer and DJ born in Houston in 1966 and long associated with New York. He rose to prominence as one half of Gang Starr alongside rapper Guru, a partnership that produced seven albums and helped define East Coast boom-bap. Beyond the group he became one of rap's most sought-after producers, crafting tracks for Nas, Jay-Z, Eminem, Common and J. Cole among many others, and later formed the duo PRhyme with Royce da 5'9". Billboard ranked him the number three rap producer of all time in 2023. His scratch-heavy, sample-driven sound remains a benchmark, and he is a formidable live DJ.
