Carlos Alberto Sánchez, known as Charlie Zaa, was born in Girardot, Colombia on 30 January 1974, the son of the singer Luis Humberto Sánchez. He sang with two Colombian salsa orchestras, Grupo Niche and Orquesta Guayacán, and then switched to bolero when he launched himself as a solo artist in the mid-1990s — the move that made his name. A kidney condition forced him off stage in Ponce, Puerto Rico in July 2004 and was corrected by surgery back home in Colombia.
