The Charl du Plessis Trio was founded by the South African classical and jazz pianist Charl du Plessis, born in Bloemfontein in 1977, and plays with Werner Spies on bass and Peter Auret on drums. Since 1999 it has recorded three albums for the Swiss label Claves Records and returned each year to the Festival Musikdorf Ernen in Switzerland. Its Baroqueswing records won South African Music Awards in 2017 and 2018, for Vol. II and Vol. III, and the trio has also taken a Ghoema Music Award for best instrumental album. Du Plessis became the youngest pianist in Africa to be made a Steinway artist in 2010, and has been Nataniël's pianist for two decades; he has played the Royal Albert Hall and the Berliner Philharmonie.
