Carbon Leaf are an American quintet from Richmond, Virginia, formed in 1992 by students at Randolph-Macon College. They fold alt-country, Celtic and folk textures into melodic indie rock, with founding singer Barry Privett doubling on penny whistle and bagpipes alongside Terry Clark and Carter Gravatt. In 2002 they won the inaugural American Music Awards Presents Coca-Cola New Music Award, becoming the first unsigned band to perform at the ceremony, and their 2004 single 'Life Less Ordinary' reached number five on Billboard's Adult Alternative chart. Their catalogue runs from 1995's Meander to 2024's Time is the Playground. Long a hard-touring act, they have shared stages with Dave Matthews Band, Jason Mraz and The Avett Brothers and remain a fixture of the festival circuit.
