Brian Kainoa Makoa McKnight Sr., born on 5 June 1969 in Buffalo, New York, is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, radio personality and multi-instrumentalist whose R&B singing is known for a strong head voice, a high belting range and melisma. He came to music through the church choir his grandfather directed, and left for Los Angeles at about nineteen after his older brother Claude, of Take 6, encouraged him to shop his demo tapes. His debut single "The Way Love Goes" arrived in 1992; the Vanessa Williams duet "Love Is" reached number three the following year, and "Back at One" peaked at number two in 1999 and remains his highest-charting song. He has sixteen Grammy nominations.
