Bonnie Tyler was a Welsh rock singer, born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen in 1951 and celebrated for the husky, weather-beaten voice that set her apart. Breaking through with 1977's "It's a Heartache", she reached global stardom in the 1980s working with producer Jim Steinman on the epic "Total Eclipse of the Heart", which sold over 13 million copies, and "Holding Out for a Hero". Her 1983 album Faster Than the Speed of Night topped the UK chart, and she earned three Grammy nominations and an MBE in 2022. A durable live performer who represented the UK at Eurovision in 2013, she toured widely, particularly across continental Europe, where her anthemic songs kept her a concert draw for decades. She died in 2026.
