Aster Aweke is an Ethiopian singer-songwriter, born in 1959 in Gondar and raised in Addis Ababa. Blending traditional Ethiopian music with jazz and soul, she began performing in the capital's clubs in the 1970s alongside bands such as Shebelle and Ibex before launching a solo career. In 1981 she moved to the United States, settling in the Washington, D.C. area, and in 1990 released the album Aster on Columbia Records, which introduced her supple, melismatic voice to international audiences. When she returned to Ethiopia in 1997 after years abroad, thousands of fans reportedly greeted her at the airport. A prolific recording artist across many albums, she remains a beloved live performer, drawing devoted crowds among Ethiopian audiences at home and across the diaspora.
