Anciients won a JUNO in 2016 and were duly anointed guiding lights for progressive metal, then went quiet for eight years while the road threw up shadowy twists and turns. Beyond the Reach of the Sun is the return, made with a new lineup. The lead single Melt the Crown fires off three guitar solos spanning plaintive folk, southern blues and psychedelic prog; Cloak of the Vast and Black opens on acoustic fingerpicking before turning into a chugging riff monster. The album tells of a society enslaved by forces from another dimension, and underneath that, of perseverance.
